On Wednesday, August 24th, 2016, the Rainbow Bar and Grill was filled to capacity as friends, fans, and associates abroad came to honor and respect the great Lemmy Kilmister. Lemmy was an English musician, singer and songwriter who founded and fronted the rock band Motörhead. His music was one of the foundations of the heavy metal genre.
After his passing in December 2015 from terminal cancer, Big Statues was approached to erect a memorial in his honor.
Matt Glenn, the lead sculpture and mastermind behind this tenacious project as well as the founder of Big Statues, was more than elated to take on this idea and represent the life of Lemmy through a custom bronze statue. The project all started with taking images of the great musician from throughout his life. From there, Matt would recreate and imitate the images into clay, making sure that everything was immaculate. Countless hours upon hours were put into the sculpting in order to include every minute detail, from the arch of the brow, to the creases in the forehead. The difficult part wasn't putting the rough details into the sculpture. Matt himself is a very detailed artist, and an expert at sculpting. What was difficult, was trying to represent the character and personality of Lemmy Kilmister, and enliven the creation. " It was a lot of pressure when I received the call to construct the memorial statue. Everyone knows Lemmy. Everyone loves, and respects him. It was on my shoulders to represent him in a manner that would be understood and approved by his fans and by the world; and I believe we did just that."
The big unveiling on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood was a huge success to say the least. The statue is currently at the Rainbow Bar and Grill and will remain there permanently, as a tribute, to Lemmy and his favorite bar where he could always be found. It is open to the public and all can come and see the fine work that was done by the marvelous and world renowned, Big Statues LLC. Lemmy was an iconic figure throughout his life. Now, even after his death, he will remain an iconic figure as his bronze memorial statue stands in remembrance of him.
